Peak demand tariffs are coming – here’s how you as an electricity user can prepare.

Starting January 1, 2027, all electricity grid operators in Sweden will introduce capacity tariffs – a new form of pricing that changes how you pay for the grid.

As society electrifies – with EVs, heat pumps, and solar panels – the load on the power grid increases. Peak Demand Tariffs are designed to smooth out peaks, create incentives for smarter electricity use, and ultimately enable the energy transition.

From energy to demand – what changes?

Traditional grid fees are based on:

– A fixed fee (SEK/year)

– A variable fee (öre/kWh)

– A fuse-based subscription fee

With Peak Demand Tariffs, a new component is added: a charge based on the highest power you use during a given period, often the highest hourly average each month. This means simultaneity – charging your car while cooking and running laundry – may cost more than spreading usage out.

Why now?

Peak Demand Tariffs are part of the Swedish Energy Markets Inspectorate’s regulations (EIFS 2022:1) and aim to make the grid more efficient. When many people use the grid at the same time, the need for costly capacity investments grows – costs that ultimately affect everyone. By sending clearer price signals, grid operators can encourage demand flexibility, shifting usage to off-peak hours.

What does it mean for you?

The big change is that you as a consumer can influence – and must take more responsibility for – your grid cost:

– Charge your EV at night instead of right after work

– Avoid running dishwasher, washing machine, and oven at the same time

– Use technology that automatically balances your household load

Our ambition

At Sourceful Energy, we believe technology – not the user – should handle the complexity. That’s why we’re building solutions that integrate data from the grid, energy markets, solar panels, and chargers to automatically manage and balance consumption in real time. The result: lower costs for you and a more sustainable energy system.
